SharePoint 2013 user profiles – Add custom properties

In SharePoint user profiles will have default properties and additional properties. Sometimes these properties will not be sufficient for information. By using custom profile properties we can extend usage information.
To create new user profile property,
Navigate to Application Management and click on Manage Service Applications link
Select the User profile service application select Manage in Operations group on ribbon.
Click Manage User Properties in people section in Manage User Profile Properties.
Click on New Property in Manage User Properties page.
Enter the Name of the new property in Name text box in Property Settings section in Add User Profile Property page. Enter Display Name to get display name of the property and select the type of the property. Click on Configure a Term Set to be used for this property to select associate the property with managed metadata term set and select term set from drop down list.
In the sub type of profile, select Default User Profile Subtype to associate the default user profile subtype with the user profile property.
Enter description about the property to display the users about this property in Description box User description section.
Select the policy settings and default privacy settings in policy settings section. Select User can override box to enable the users to override the settings.
Select the users who can edit properties in Edit Settings section and in Display Settings section specify how to view the property.
Select Alias check box or Indexed check box or both as per the search kinds to associate with user profile property in search settings section.
Click on OK button. We can the property in Custom property section as shown below.
